That is odd. The physical key inside the fob is supposed to be the manual / mechanical way to enter the car if all else is dead. My battery died this past summer and that's how I got in (2003 9-3 Arc). Make sure you turn the key both ways in the lock. From memory (might be wrong) it opens the door in the opposite direction you'd expect. My car only has 37,200 miles on it, mostly put on when I drove to work each weekday from 2003 until around 2012. Began working from home around 2012, so very few miles on the 9-3 after that. I have found I should start the car and run it up to temp once per week in order to keep the battery charged. If I don't do that and get closer to two weeks, I'll end up with a very weak non-starting battery or it will be completely dead. With the last battery it was a few years old so I just replaced it. I did bring it back very slowly on a Battery Tender once or twice. I'd say I have probably had a parasitic draw on the battery from new but I never realized it when the car was driven daily. I believe many of these cars do to a certain degree.
