Just did a Arc 9-3 SS 2004. Tested both Manual and Automatic. Haven't driven a Manual in 11 years - but contrary to the reviews, I thought the manual was extreeeeeeemely sweet. First gear was sooooo smooth had to adjust to it by letting the clutch out almost without any addition of gas. I used to have a Volvo diesel w/manual and various manual Honda's and a BMW 2002 - all manual....but this really was the nicest ever.
Yet I have a wife and spend about 95% of my time during the driving year in congested traffic. Average speed around this town is 13 mph according to surveys. MOst of my mileage though comes in the summer on the highways....I could have justified it. But since my wife needs to drive the car and doesn't do stick shift.....I went with automatic. If you don't have this constraint......I'd go manual. But the car is swift enough with either I don't think there's as much of a street-cost in performance as once was the case. You'll have fun with the car either way.
