Warranty oil changes confusion?

The dealer shouldn't be paying for the oil change every 15k mi. They should be paying for the oil change every time the OLS tells them to during the first 36k mi. (Explanation linked below.) That's the beauty of the OLS. It monitors your operating conditions (not accounting for catastrophic problems like head gasket leaks or air filter breaches) & can estimate the oil's remaining life with amazing accuracy. If you're doing a lot of short trips in cold weather, then you'll get a shorter interval.
But, like Dick says, there're huge differences between what's "legally" called a full syn. The only oils available meeting the GM-LL-A/B-025 spec are premium-quality Group IV & V based oils, & have better additive packages than the average gasoline-rated full syns. GM wants their environmental credits, but they don't want to buy owners new turbo engines after 30k mi. So they created the spec to ensure only premium-quality full syn was used by the owners, & bumped up the engine's oil capacity by 50%.
