As I was driving to take the GRE exams on Thursday morning, my power steering made a nasty noise and then quit completely. I kept driving with no power steering, figuring whatever damage had been done was done already, took the exams, and drove the 10 miles back to school. Called the dealer, drove the car in (by then I was getting used to taking turns at 35mph or needing the strength of a thousand men to pull the wheel), and they told me one of my power steering lines (below the radiator) rusted through, which burned out the pump. I may not understand it correctly, but I would imagine that I lost all my power steering fluid at once when the hose rusted through, and that essentially fried the pump. Lovely. To save yourself $1300, I'd recommend that you check your power steering lines (maybe someone can describe what they look like and where they're located?) for rust, especially here in the northeast. This doesn't, by any chance, fall under any type of rust warranty, does it?
