Dealer most always charges big buck$. If you have an indy and are not into DIY, then definately go there. If they can't save you on the parts, they can at least save you on the labour charges ($20-30+ savings per hour). They are also willing to try "patches," such as a retorque of the head before simply stating $2K for a head gasket.

Head gasket leaks are common on later Saabs because the head bolts used were changed somewhere around 99. Dean and Anders are trying to see if it may have been sooner. That with a non-motivated assembler one day might equal a loose head. This is why there was a TSB for OG9-3. Even though they may be common, it IS an issue if not looked at (ie. retorque). I did retorque my 1997 as a precaution (DIY).

As for the water pump, dealer was actually ok for price for me. I had the car in there to look at it just to say yes, it needs a new one, and when they quoted a bit more than $400, I said okay since the part would probably be around $300, and I did not want/have the time to spend a day on it myself. Also have the thermostat replaced at that time if done.

Rotors and pads are an easy DIY. I used aftermarket PBR/Axxis metal master pads and Zimmerman rotors from eEuroparts and saved a ton for the rears. Fronts will be soon and same course of action. Although Saab rotors have some nice coating on them to prevent rust on the hub part, I could not justify the vast difference in price. Also, the pads helped to significantly reduce the dust I was getting. The only problems I have heard of is with EBC green pads causing warping, but that appears to happen if not bedded in properly.

Ask for aftermarket if taken to indy, and even better if you can bring your own, although he/she might not guarantee the work. Best of luck.
