I used to work at an engine components supplier for the Big Three (or Big Two depending on your point of view). Anyway, the current Saab 2.0L is a direct descendant of the engine program at GM called the L850. L850 was designed to be the corporate I-4 engine block for a variety of GM applications from the Cavalier (now Cobalt) to Lotus. This includes all of the Domestic GM nameplates, Vauxhall, Opal, Lotus and Saab. Everyone was free to make their own modifications to suit their purpose and price range, but the basic block is the same. The plus of being taken into account during the design process for Saab is that they get to make sure they can add what they need to the block to make it work (like oil jets to cool the pistons from the back instead of splash lubrication that the domestics use in their engines). They also get the tremendous weight savings that comes with aluminum blocks. My 99 Saab 9-3 is actually quite heavy for its size and the big reason is the lump of cast iron hanging out over the front wheels. The minus is that we lose the exceptional rigidity associated with that heavy piece of cast iron. Saab's rally cars were boosted to 750 hp with essentially the same block. The L850 would explode like a grenade with that much boost. But for the real world, the cast Al is really a better option, and Honda and Toyota have been doing them with cast iron liners for years with great successs and durability.

I will admit though, that I was sorry to see the old 2.0L go, because it is a hell of in engine in my car.
