I have a 9-3 Aero and a 9-5 Aero. the 17" rims and tires that come on these cars are really only summer tires. We got about 3 inches of snow a few weeks ago and the Pirelli's on the 9-3 were like sleds. I haven't put snows on the 9-3 (this is its first winter) but the 9-5 with snows is a tank and without them it is a pig.
If you do get it, the SAAB dealer should have a great package for rims and snows. I am getting mine next week- five spoke SAAB alloys with Gislaved snow tires for $820- installed. Or get steel wheels from tirerack for about 450.
If you don't want the snows (or don't get much snow) you may be OK if you are careful, but I would look at an Arc with 16" rims and all-season tires if you don't want the added expense.
