There are 2 main types of mbc's. These bost completely bypass the bpc.
Bleed style- This is the same technology that the bpc uses, in which a needle restricts(not blocks) airflow which allows a higher boost to be achieved with more restriction. This type allows the wastegate to open up to the boost pressure as the boost builds.
Ball&spring- This type uses a ball and spring to block boost until a certain boost level is reached by spring tension. This style allows for very quick spoolup, but the downfall is that since this blocks any boost from building up in the wastegate line keeping the wastegate closed until that peak boost (set by the spring tension) is reached. This will cause an overshoot since the wastegate has not been opened and boost keeps building until so. This causes a fuel cut located at 15.5 psi on the t-5 in the ng/9-3.
+A-Anticipator- this is an added extra to the ball&spring mbc, which compensates for the overshoot by building pressure to prime the wg line to shorten the response time when the ball lifts off its seat.
As far as the electronic boost control, see which type it utilizes, but i have not heard of many using them because of their cost.
