Using high quality synthetic oil for longer intervals is better than recycling frequently. You may FEEL better knowing that you're doing the right thing with your waste oil (& you ARE doing the right thing by recycling it), but you're still generating more needless waste by changing it more frequently than is necessary. Yes, it can be re-processed into another form & re-used, but why go thru all that? Remember, it's not just you & your car. It's the millions (& millions) of people & THEIR cars, too. Even changing your oil twice as often as necessary will create billions of extra gallons of waste oil.
And if you change your oil "enough," your car won't last any longer by changing it "more than enough." That is, with GM's latest Oil Life System monitor in the car, & AT LEAST Mobil 1 0W-40 in the 6L sump, there's no need to worry about your oil until the OLS says. (M1 5W-40 or 15W-50 (or comparable Amsoil oils) are better & will give an extra margin of protection over 0W-40.)
Saab has been filling these cars with premium syn since April of 2000. If you're worried about "manufacturing debris" circulating in the engine, don't. The filter will catch anything you'd need to worry about. Still can't sleep? Then simply change the filter cartridge & top up with more 0W-40.
