More power and AWD are not always synonymous with performance.
European car makers are stuck in the same trap that did in US manufacturers in the 70's... in the short run, there is more money to be made by following the customer demographic as it ages, and sell up - size and more luxury over performance, design and bang for the buck. US car makers changed their image when the money to be made shifted back down the demographic curve. So will BMW, Saab and Volvo when their time comes.
I was going to trade in my 8-year old NG 900SET on a 9-3 a year ago, but the lack of a hatch and any real new feature that would attract me held me back since my car is mechanically fine.
As for handling, I am thinking about paying someone to do an upgrade at 100k while the original clutch and suspension are still ok, and then running the car into the ground while saving up to buy a sportscar when I turn 50 (chuckle).
