9-5 Software

I have a 1999 9-5, which I continue to consider the best car I've owned. My only problem with it has to do with the processor hardware/software which controls, among other things, the "check engine/check transmission" warnings. I've had three apparent malfunctions, NONE of which had anything to do with either engine or transmission - all in the chips/softare. In one case, it went into "limp-home" mode in the Olympic Mountains, which required having it hauled to Seattle (after serious overheating resulting from its refusal to shift down). Fortunately it was still in warranty at the time, or the cost of the haul-back alone would have been huge.
I imagine a number of people have had similar problems, but I wonder whether having the software updated to the latest version does any good. Does anyone have any experience this?
