LPT4 vs V6 - Lesson from Volvo?

Many have noted that U.S. buyers generally favor a V6 or V8 while traditional Saab owners swear by the I4. Back in 1989 when I got my first Volvo, the top-of-the-line 760's offered a choice of engines - a HPT (LPT's not around then) 4-cylinder Volvo engine, or a "special for the U.S." 6-cylinder engine supplied by Renault. Performances were similar and the debate then, as it is now, was whether one should get the true Volvo 4 (760GLT) or be brave and get the V6 (760GLE) to avoid any longevity issues associated with turbos. Guess what, the V6 turned out to be much less reliable and Volvo's PR suffered enormously. Beginning with the 850 model, Volvo introduced an inline 5-cylinder engine that developed into the workhorse for the first generation S70/V70's and the current S60/V70 lineup. This bought it time to develop its own 6-cylinder engine that now powers the S80/V90 and Volvo's market has grown stadily through the years. Could it be that Saab is on the same learning curve with respect to the U.S. market, but only more than decade behind Volvo?
