Ture, although GM also wants to be selling in China, they've invested big bucks (will be over $5 billion in the next few years) to be the one making/selling GM vehicles there. They want the market share.
The point made about being one of GM's few global brands is pretty big. In reality, it's the only one. Despite all the investment in Caddy's products, it's been a total total total flop overseas (1100 cars in Europe in 2004). That can't be ignored. For now, at least, GM needs Saab. Beans are a big deal in corporatethink, but they are trumped by 'mission' and 'strategy'. Unless they have an ace in the hole, like a deal to buy BMW, selling Saab = no legitimate worldwide entry to the higher end.
How this affects the brand in the next 5 years is a totally open question, of course.
