Try to be very tidy when doing the work. You don't want any contamination to enter the turbo as the tolerances are extremely tight and small particles can screw things up.
Instead of filling the turbo with oil and getting into a big mess, an easy way to let the engine do the work (a trick from the Volvo mailing list) is to crank the engine so that it doesn't start (by pulling the ignition coil lead or fuel pump fuse, for example) for a few nice long tries. This will pump oil into the turbo, but not make it spin.
