VW and MB have also extended warranties for sludge...some Chryslers sludge, I don't know if anything official happened with them, but as you rightly pointed out, most manufacturers are having this problem.
It's the price paid for 'free maintenance'. Smaller pans & filters, ludicrous intervals, 'bare minimum' oil specs, all of these were a bean-counting decision to be able to offer 'free' maintenance -- at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. Not all of these apply to Saab, each manufacturer has its 'official line' and then a set of unindicted co-conspirators (pan, filter, PCV, dealer, engine layout, heat, oil recommendation, etc etc).
But they mostly share the same result and recommendation: engines sludge up, and the solution is better oil on a shorter interval.
One would think as the beancounters realize replacing blown engines gets pricey, they'd change free programs, but the market has come to expect 'free', so they're going to have to take the hit on this one.
We'll probably also see some move to redefine 'severe service'. Some people seem to think severe means that they drive alot, blasting down the highway, throwing the car around...when it's actually the opposite. As we know, light, short-trip use is worst.
We'll also see more 'oil sensors' (usage pattern programs), and (these are all guesses) teething problems with them, too. Of course, the manufacturer has no wiggle room at all in that case if the changes were done...
