City driving plus automatic plus 3800lb car will do that. Better get use to it, especially if 90% is city mix.
Of all the cars in my family, ONLY the ones with a stick actually ever rose above the estimated average fuel economy. That's why I only drive sticks. Besides, manuals give you alot more flexibility, but I suppose your left leg would tire quickly if all you do is city driving.
My wife's 2.3L wagon with stick averages 28-29mpg. On long trips, we've had 31mpg. The only noticeable things that ever increased my mileage were oil changes. Air filter changes affected my other cars a lot, but NOT the 9-5.
