I just had warranty work done at the dealer (sludge issue and car was under warranty (43k miles on '01 Aero). Ended up with a invoice ot $4900. This included:
- brand new short block, pistons, cranks, timing chain components
- reconditioned head
- de-sluge oil pan
- couple of other things while the engine was out.
We contemplated about replacing the turbo, since the labor would be free. It would have been another $600 (out of our pocket).
Now we basically have a new engine. I'm not sure if the dealer charges less hours for warranty work (probably). But definitley, if I were to be spending $6000, I'd go for a new engine. Even if you were to get a 'used engine' from junkyard and had an Indi swap the enine, it would not have costed more than $4000. (When my NG900 rod went out at 70k, I bought a 'newer' engine from junkyard for $1000. I DIY'ed the engine swap (did HG as precaution) and other maintanance items while the engine was out), so it only costed me about $1500.)
Anyways, I feel for you.
James from Michigan...
