On my 1998 Saab 9-5, the airflow to the drivers side no longer is temperature controlled - it sends air at the ambient temperature without heating or cooling.

On making the diagnostic check by pressing auto and off, it gives me 1......6.

The reference 6, gives :

6
Stepping motor, air-mixing flap, LH
Open circuit, short to B+ or short to ground
B2490




B2490, gives :

B2490

Heater Flap Motor Left. Open Circuit

Heater Flap Motor Left. Short Circuit

Fault symptoms
Perceived temperature in cabin too high or too low compared to the set temperature.

Conditions
The following conditions apply:

• When the current on one of the control module stepping motor outputs exceeds a certain value, the diagnostic trouble code for short circuit will be set.
• If any of the stepping motor outputs sense that the control current is less than 55 mA, a diagnostic trouble code for open circuit is generated.
• Continuous monitoring and when calibrating.

My dealer is shaking his head and talking about how many man hours it takes to remove and replace the dash - at least 3 days + the cost of the heater replacement kit.

Is there a simpler solution?

It seems a little problem and an absurdly expensive solution. Can Saab engineers really have designed it like this?

Thanks for any suggestions I can make to the dealer's mechanic, whom I think is good willing but who has a general instruction from his bosses :

"AC problem, make replacement".
