NEW HIGH SPEED STRATEGY FOR SAAB
The time is running out for Saab, who completely is lacking a plan of growth. Now GM is sketching on a speed solution to save the brand.
After Augustsson retreat and the development department’s move to Germany, the faith of Saab is all in the hands of GMs Europe division in Zurich. There, the Concerns chief Carl-Peter Forster is sketching on a new plan to let the brand have a fresh model program for the end of this decennium.
Gone are the plans of a rear wheel driven 9-5 on the Zeta platform since that platform is junked by Detroit for cost reasons. Gone is also the 9-6 that should have been built by Subaru. Cost reasons mentioned even there.
Citing insiders at GM, it now looks like the master plan is as follow:
* NEW 9-5 (debut 2008) and the 9-3 (debut 2009) is being built on the same architecture, Epsilon II as a refinement of what’s used for the 9-3 right now. * 9-5 being longer and wider then the 9-3. Front wheel drive is being complemented by four wheel drive, and V6 engine is used for the top models.
Both models could be built on the same line in Russelheim.
* The third model is going to be a crossover based on the Korean Chevrolet S3X, a compact Hyundai Tucson rival that is built both in a Saab- and Cadillac-version. That car will probably be the only one that has a chance to be built in Trollhättan – if the volume could be made big enough.
