Replacement of the belt AND pulleys is recommended by SAAB EVERY 60K miles. If you're only seeing cracks it's probably OK. If a cord is broken, do the service now. I tried to go 120K like I used to on my 9000....a pulley came apart, and the belt came off. You can't drive at all when this happens. The belt drives the power steering, alternator, A/C compressor, and water pump. Without the water pump, driving the car will heat up the engine and possibly warp the heads.....a very expensive proposition.
When you do this service be sur to go to the shorter belt and eliminate the center pulley. SAAB makes the 9-5 this way now.
