I replaced the water pump on my 2000 9-5 Aero once. The impeller is metal. The tempature gauge sensor is located on the left side (driver side, US) of the cylinder head.
The most commen cause of overheating is the thermostat...replace it first...and do a good flush. Make sure that the fans are running; they should come on automatically when things heat up. I would suspect the water pump last. I had a 9000 Aero with the exact same symptons; it turned out to be the radiator...clogged up. Now, I have a 2000 9-5 Aero with 248,000 miles on it.....no overheating problems.
