Hi Anders,
I bought the car second hand a couple of weeks ago (85Kmiles). Before I bought it I had it checked out by the Dutch AAA. They do a pretty thorough check and found the car to be in excellent shape but also mentioned that the chains were noisy. Normally these guys are pretty much dead on when it comes to pointing out the problems in cars but I still have to take it to the dealer to have somebody check it out who listens to these engines more often. But if there is a problem I'm going to fix it myself, hence the question.
When cold I have no real indication of chain noise at idle, nor when it is warm. If I rev the engine to 2000 or so it gets bit noisier on the chain side of the engine.
My 9000 died at 225K miles so I can't compare to that anymore. I never noticed any chain noise on my 9000 though.
I found one of your messages where you said that the chains should be no problem unless you have a sludge problem. I don't seem to have a sludge problem: lifted valve cover and scraped the oil pan and the car was always serviced by the dealer with synthetic oil.
