First, you probably do need a new crank position sensor (CKP). My dealer has run into a slew of similar failures with the arrival of summer (4-5 per week), and replacements are on backorder. Most failures are on V6s.
I've always used premium in my '99 V6. It might run just fine on lower grade, but the difference in fuel cost doesn't seem enough to justify being cheap to the engine.
