Same thing happened to me with the 17" wheels at 8k. I hit an unmarked, raised manhole cover at a construction site while only going 10-15mph. I have asked the construction co to pay for the tire, and I think their insurance co is going to reimburse me ($370).
I was only 2 miles from the Saab dealer where I bought the car, but they did not have a replacement tire, and neither did the other 3 Saab dealers I called, nor NTB, etc. Getting the replacement tire for the odd sized Aero wheel took an extra day (at an independant tire place) plus FedEx charges. Extra time on the doughnut and without a spare, and a very expensive tire.
I did not hit the manhole cover all that hard and lots of other people were hitting it with impunity, and it makes me very nervous about the reliability of 17" wheels in this land of winter and spring potholes. They are re-paving I95 here, and everytime I hit a pavement thickness change jump, my stomach turns over expecting another blowout or two.
After the new tire was put on, the car drifted/pulled to the left with the new tire on the front (left) due to the difference in wear. The tires were rotated at 10k, and it has been fine since.
