I need to correct a couple of statements that DaveG made - the retractable cargo net is NOT a permanent installation (other than the two flush mountng brackets in the left rear seat back). And it is not a significant obstruction to the cargo carrying ability of the Wagon. It takes all of 30 seconds to remove.
The main hollow steel tube that contains the rolled up net is attached to the back of the left (larger) seat back by two wedge shaped mounts. To remove the entire assembly from the seat, simply lower the right seat back, then the left. (You can't lower the left first because the net tube interferes with the right seat back.) Make sure the right rear door is open, because the tube has to go out that way! From the left side of the car, smack the tube to the right with the heel of your hand and it will easily pop out of the tapered mounts. You can store it on the floor behind the front seats if you need to travel with only one rear seat back down. If you are travelling with both down, there is little need to remove it.
I really like the net for long trips. I always end up with more stuff at the end than when I started, and the net lets me fold back the parcel shelf and pile stuff up above the seat backs without fear that it will fly forward in a sudden stop. The advantage of the net over the bars is that you can use the net with the seat backs up _and_ with them down - there are additional upper net mounting points in the headliner immediately behind the front seats. The bar does take up a minimal amount of space in the rear cargo area, but it is not objectionable to me. I leave mine installed always, but with the net stowed unless I need it up for some reason.
The net is flexible and extremely tough, but it would _not_ stand up to chewing!!!!! Get the steel bars if you are transporting animals that are not confined in their crates.
