You are right about the V-6 as far as it's role as a mid pack passenger car engine, and it's purpose is to help sell cars to people who keep a "cylinder count",ie: those who would not choose a Saab due to it's having a four cylinder engine. The other iterations of this engine that you mentioned,Cadillac, Opel, and Saturn, are all in a pretty close state of tune to the Saab version. 180hp-220 hp is not a very wide variation, especially for a three litre displacement. My point was that if Saab were looking to showcase one motor as it's highest performance version, as it has done with the 2.3.turbo of the Aero, the V-6 would not have been up to the task. It's internal architecture is not nearly as strong as the four.
The four is also lighter, and it's lack of heft results in a lighter feel from the front end when pushing hard through turns. Beter fuel economy is another benefit of the four.
