JAck and all,
I had a coolant leak for a while now, and like others, no trace on the engine or the ground, and no smell.
However, I did a pressure test with a MightyVac, with the engine COLD (small leaks are easier to pinpoint when cold). I hooked my apparel on the reservoir, with a plug in the overflow hose. After 3 minutes of pumping action, pressure stabilized at 140 kPa (21 psi, yikes !) precisely and at first looked stable. After a minute or so, the needle dropped a tiny bit, indicating a loss of pressure.
Now, find it...
Car on ramps, with a clean cardboard under, I went away and waited around 5 minutes. Then, there was a very small coolant spot, coming from what looked like the center of the engine, just above the cold-side turbine of the turbo. Usual suspect is the block heater, but it was dry. And there is no other frost plug on that side of the engine. So must be either the water pump (replaced under warranty), or the head gasket...
Water pump was dry, but EPC shows an aluminum adapter between the block and the pump. That adapter is sealed by 2 O-rings. After more than 1 hour of dismantling, I found that these O-rings were indeed badly gouged, like if someone forced then in place with no lubrication. Bingo !, that was it.
I did ordered these and all the other rubber parts of that area (bypass hose and turbo water line O-ring), and reinstalled all the stuff in 45 minutes. No more slow leak. Don't forget to lube them before, white grease is what SAAB use.
Sidebar: when working, I dropped my 10mm wrench, a 13mm long socket and at least 3 bolts. None of them touched the ground. I did found them all (mostly on the top of the AC compressor) except the 10mm wrench, after a very lenghty search. When I did a road test later, on a hard left turn, I clearly heard a metallic sound from the engine compartment, then something hitting the floorpan... Now my precious 10 mm wrench is lying on the highway, at the end of an onramp.
I will miss her...
