My first Saab! ...but problem with hatch latch Posted by NP [Email] (#244) [Profile/Gallery] (more from NP) on Fri, 19 Aug 2005 22:24:48 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I am the proud new owner of a 2000 9-5 wagon. Thanks to all those who posted earlier advice. I'm loving it so far. I really dig all the thoughtful touches--you start to wonder why all cars can't be as smart.
Unfortunately, it seems like I'll have to drop some money right away into a couple of problems. Some advice would be appreciated. I'm so glad this site is here for help and communication.
First, I've found that the lights in the hatch of the wagon (one dome light, and two on the inside of the hatch that illuminate downward, and two red safety reflectors) only work once in a great while. Of course, the only time they DO work is during full daylight. I took it to an independent shop today and they said I would need to replace the hatch latch (that's fun to say). The price of the part is $150. I'm inclined to fix this, since it's both a safety and convenience feature. However, because the lights DO work rarely, it seems like there should be a less costly solution. I played around with the latch while the hatch was open. The hatch seems to open and close just fine, but it looks like the latch doesn't fully slide open. If I push the latching mechanism to the left and then a little to the right--TA DA!--all the lights come on. It would be a pain to do that every time, but it'd be cheaper than ~$200.
Any thoughts on why it wouldn't fully work? Maybe some grease would loosen it up? Also, if the latch isn't working properly, could that cause any safety concerns?
Sorry for the length of this. I'll ask other questions later. Thanks!
