This happened on my '99 2.3 LPT three years ago. It turned out that they changed the fuel tank design in mid-'99, and that the earlier ones were prone to either cracking or otherwise getting a small hole rubbed in them. The leak would confuse the computer into thinking that the fuel filler cap isn't on all the way. Apparently the problem is more common in hot areas, like Arizona (where I live). After the dealership replaced (under warranty) the gas tank five times, I worked out a deal with Saab USA to get into another Saab.
If you made it 80K miles before you got this message, it's highly likely that you are experiencing a different problem. It might even just be a defective gas cap.
But if it turns out to be a bad gas tank, especially if the problem recurs after fixing it, I would suggest calling Saab USA. This is a known problem and, although you are out of warranty, they may be willing to work something out.
Good luck!
