I currently have a similar problem: air only comes from the defroster.

I posted a couple of months back and another owner reported that the dealer replaced an "air deflector flap" for a reasonable price. I'm a couple hours from the nearest dealer so have not taken this in for repair. When I asked the service department about the problem, they said to make an appointment, etc. (wouldn't say if they had that part, or if that could be the problem). I'd love to see some good pictures / diagrams of what's involved if anyone has a source for that.

Let me know what you discover.
