C'mon. Not only is a stock M-5 a lot faster than the Aero, but saying that an Aero with performance modifications could possibly be faster than the M-5 begs the question: How much faster would the M-5 be if you put an equal percentage of it's list price into modifications?
Stock M-5 does 0-60 mph in about 5 seconds flat. 2001 Aero with 5 speed manual does it in about 6.6-6.8 seconds. Not only is that a world of difference when you get down to those times, but it is highly unlikely that even if you could up the Aero's horsepower to competitive levels, that you could harness it to the road to make use of it.
On the other hand, the Aero costs about one half of the M-5, is roomier, more comfortable, is much more serviceable, is a car that you can actually use in everyday transportation ,can be had with a terrific 5 speed AUTOMATIC transmission, and most importantly,is a car that you can actually go to your dealer and buy!. Each BMW dealer only can get one or two M-5s per year. Not only is price non negotiable for the most part, but most go out the door at a premium, and you are unlikely to get much choice of color or options.
In the real world of everyday driving, the Aero is by far the better car for me. By the way, did I mention about 30 miles per gallon versus about 15 for the BMW.
