Other than a worn out battery that caused starting problems this year on my 1999 2.3lpt 9-5, I haven't had any other such trouble. Nonetheless, I spent much time with one of my formerly owned Saabs (1993 2.0l non-turbo automatic...somewhat of a "tractor") when it began to have electrical power and starting problems. Stepping on the brakes would cause the headlights to dim and the radio would also shut off. I checked all battery connections, starting cable connections, and grounding cable connections. I pulled the alternator and had it bench tested and it was perfectly up to spec. Finally, I found a SaabNet contributor who recommended checking both the cable from the battery to the fuseable link/wiring harness and the grounding cable from the engine to the frame to the battery. Hidden within the insulation of one of these, there was enough internal corrosion of the wire strands to effectively reduce the current carrying capacity of the cable. I was essentially getting a "brown out" as the reduced electrical capacity of the cable couldn't carry enough juice required by the starter or the addition of brake lights when I did have the car running with the headlights and radio on.
My cheap and effective solution cost all of about $4.00 with a length of large stranded insulated house wiring cable and crimp-on lugs I bought from my local Home Depot. The replacement cable was not nearly as flexible as the original, due to the greatly reduced number of strands, and I am aware of the electrical theory of greater suface area multi-stranded wire current capabilities, but my replacement cable solution seemed to work just fine and I never heard a word of complaint back from the fellow who bought the car from me a year later. Just in case you are still trying to track down your 9-5 starting problem, this might be something to check as well. Best of Luck!!
