'Chattering' through steering column...

For the past 5000 miles I've been able to feel an intermittent 'chattering' through the steering wheel. It's less than a vibration, perhaps better described as a faint rumble, and it comes and goes from one minute to the next. Anybody else have this or any ideas?
More detail:
It's noticeable on every journey, short or long. Ironically it's what you might expect to feel if a wheel bearing had shattered, but I just had both of those replaced under warranty re the clunking problem when reversing on full lock. This cured the clunk, and I'd hoped it would also cure the 'chattering' but it's still there. There's no noise, just the constant annoying feeling of something 'loose' being transmitted through the steering wheel.
My dealer says they've retorqued all front suspension/steering bolts, and having driven the car will only say it feels like all other 9-5s. I've also driven a few others but am confident that none have this problem. So I'm now wondering about shock mountings, steering knuckles or even rack problems.
It's a long shot I know, but anyone have any thoughts on this?
Thanks everybody.
