My guess is that the fuel-efficiency improvement is NOT outweighed by the increase in cost of Premium. Even in Paul's example above, he had a 9.8% improvement in fuel efficiency by his numbers by moving to Premium. However, here in San Jose, premium is about $0.40 per gallon more than regular ($3.40 vs. $3.00) or a 13.3% increase in cost.
I guess the net value is how much you will really appreciate the added horsepower of running premium on a car that recommends it. For long road trips with a lot of freeway running, I'd say run regular unleaded for sure. At constant (reasonable) freeway speeds, you only need a fraction of your engine's output anyway. Would it be fair to assume that the fuel economy improvement in this situation would be even less pronounced than under heavier loads? I'm not an engineer, so this is purely a guess on my part.
