If the car haven't had any updates at all done, it might benefit to have the very latest done, TSB 210-2417 ed3.
That can be done by enlarging a hole inside the PCV box from 4mm to 5.5mm or you could purchase the new PCV box kit (55560548 $9.70) from Saab and just swap out the box.
The car might also benefit from having all new PCV hoses at this time if they have not been replaced before.
Those hoses gets mushy with age and tend to rupture sending some oil fumes into the fresh air intake.
It has been 4 TSBs issued as I know of but the second one (TSB 210-2417)was nullified by the third one (TSB 210-2417 ed2) and the fourth one (TSB 210-2417 ed3) was almost a retraction back to the first one (SI 210-2353). Go figure.
Deep down inside I don't think it is a problem with the crank case ventilation system but a slew of other problems that when all of them suddenly meet up on the same car, that's when it goes bad.
I have a whole bunch of 9-3 and 9-5 customers whose cars doesn't burn a drop of oil, but then I have quite a few that burn oil like crazy without really any symptoms of anything being wrong or the engine being sludged up.
One rumor is that it might be connected to these new types of low friction engines where they have made the piston rings so soft to reduce drag (better fuel economy) that the piston rings doesn't seal properly and oil is allowed to pass by the rings and get burned in the combustion chamber.
Bad piston rings would also reduce the efficiancy of the PCV system because the engine doesn't produce enough vacuum (less breathing).
