It is not enough of cases with solid service and driving information for me to just point to one thing (driving habits).
Another customer of mine had 39K on his 2000 when the engine and turbo went South (this was 2004). He couldn't either present enough oil change recepits to please the dealer. The only receipts I saw was dealer oil change at 10, 20 and 30K miles but he said he had more. That is enough of miles per year in my eyes to count for more than just short trip (severe) driving.
As you might see on this board too, when we ask posters about specific info of oil change intervals and what oil they used and what type of driving they did, it is very few that comes up with a full disclosure, and so forth, you don't really know what came first (hen or the egg).
No, I don't think short trip driving (in cold climates) can take the full blame for this even though that is what Saab have settled on.
Both you and I know that cold climates are hard to find around Los Angeles area and we see sludge cars here too.
I bet it was drivers back in the 80s that drove short trips too every day, and we didn't see that many sludge cars, especially low mileage ones.
I drive 2 miles to work every day and the engine is clean as a whistle inside. I change the oil 2 times a year (every 1500 miles).
No, as I have said before, I think it is a whole bunch of combinations that creates sludge.
Driving style, oil quality, oil change intervals, leased cars, loose head gaskets, too fine oil pick up screen, PCV problem, soft piston rings, oil pump design change, cold oil changes.
When all the stars line up in the sky, it starts a chain reaction and then the ball is rolling toward oil sludge like a domino maze.
You might be able to take one domino brick out of the game and halt the road to destruction before it is too late.
That brick could be; (if you can't change driving style) tighten the head gasket, shorten oil change intervals, use of high quality oil, open up the oil pick up screen, make sure PCV hoses are not rotted and broken, hot oil changes and so forth.
I know we are not in agreement on oil change intervals but I too beleive in 10K between changes for A FEW selected drivers that meet stringent requirements like driving 10K in 6 months or less time and that knows how to check the oil level and add oil ones in awhile. All others should be adviced on 5K miles 6 month oil change interval.
Beleive it or not, I have customers that rather come in earlier for oil changes than having to pull the dip stick up and check the level.
I think that if a 6 month oil change schedule would be recommended instead of mile requirement, it would solve a lot of problems.
