I've only had the car about 6 months and only driven it about 6 k miles. I wasn't aware that the balance chain had been removed - it didn't show up in the repair records I got with the car (which at the time seemed very complete). While the dealer shop didn't say anything about it, the warranty company said their adjuster identified a bit of sludge in the crankcase, but that they had been advised that Saab had taken responsibility for sludged engines by the dealer.
We did use Carfax before purchasing and it appeared to not have any warning flags. The car had a short stint as a rental in California (7k) and then was owned by a single individual for four years - the mileage was regularly spaced over those years.
Honestly, at this point, I just need my car back and I've had enough of the dealership. I'm attempting to find another saab-specific shop in the Pittsburgh PA area to take it to in the future.
