I have 2 base 9-5's (2001's), picked up the same day last May. In the beginning I ran both exclusively on 87 -- no problems. For about 5 weeks now I've been running one with 87 and the other with 89, just to see if the extra cost in gas would pay off in increased mpg and/or performance. I really haven't seen much of an increase in the mpg with the 89, although it does seem roughly 1-3 more mpg (as per SID). Power-wise, I don't really detect any increase -- although would I really be able to? It's not like I'm clocking myself off the line!
My next fill-up will be to start a 92/93 vs 87 comparison and see if that one looks like it warrants the additional cost. If I don't see any dramatic improvements, I'll have no problem sticking with 87 exclusively.
I've read here that the Saab computer knows what grade fuel you are using, and adjusts accordingly (there may be an adjustment period though). If CD tested the Aero, all of us 'basers' shouldn't necessarily assume that the results would be the same to us, particularly since, as I've become very aware thanks to this board , the base and the Aero are very different cars. But I drive 300 - 400 miles a week, and the gas cost is significant. If I'm not detecting any significant improvement, regardless of whether I can afford the extra or not, I'd prefer to spend my money elsewhere rather than at the pump! I still drive way too much over the speed limit, zoom past folks with ease, and although I'd always love more power, at what cost is the question.
