I don't believe that inline 4's are inherintly more prone to vibrating than V-6's. Actually, I believe that it would be the opposite, that a "V" is more prone to vibration than an inline.
Comparing the SAAB 4 to their 6, the difference is 2.3 liter vs. 3.0, and the relative sizes of the pistons. A little simple division shows that the 2.3 has larger bore (and pistons) than the 3.0. This would make balancing vibrations out of the 4 a little more difficult than the 6.
The SAAB 2.3 is relatively large for a 4 cylinder, which makes it difficult to compare to the typical smaller engine found in Japanese cars, which don't have this vibration problem.
I still think that SAAB could do more with the Trionic. Raise the idle some when stopped, but whenever the car is moving, keep the idle lower, so you don't have a fast idle while moving.
