Insurance benefits the risk taker at the expence of the cautious.
The insurance industry makes their money on pooling risk exposures. That is, your Saab is in the same pool as all GM cars (with the GM warranty). With other warrantys, is often pooled with all cars including Hondas and Toyotas. That means that the net average of all claims in the pool determines the markup that they are able to enjoy in competition with other carriers. How they select their pools and how they weigh their risk exposures is up to the company and part of their actuarial algorithm. Since there are so many Toyotas and Hondas, and they are vastly reliable, they drive down the cost of the insurance and our Aeros barely register a blip in the grand scheme.
When I am buying a product that I know I will beat the daylights out of (like a laptop or a lawnmower) I will always buy insurance. If I buy something that will see less than agerage use TV set or a dishwasher (small family), I will not buy insurance. Remember, Insurance benefits the risk taker at the expence of the risk averse.
