Buy backup DIC for 1999 9-5 V6? Posted by billherbst [Email] (#2137) [Profile/Gallery] (more from billherbst) on Sun, 19 Mar 2006 07:00:31 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I've owned my '99 9-5 SE Sportwagon (V6) for almost a year, and it's been great so far. For a 7-year-old car with 78,000 miles, it's cherry and a fabulous ride.
When the DIC/IDM recall was announced, I was initially pretty disappointed to be left out with all the other '99 owners, but I'm mostly over that now. Just bad luck from the Car Gods.
Given the pending recall, prices have come down significantly on DICs (at least temporarily). eEuroparts has '99 V6 replacement DIC units for $153 each (the V6 uses two of them).
Question #1: Do you good folks here on the board think that should I pony up now while prices are low and buy a replacement DIC to carry in the car at all times? Seems like fairly cheap insurance against catastrophic failure and the worry of getting stranded. Or is it mythic paranoia? We all know that this board is chock full of nasty stories about sudden DIC failure, and the DIC did indeed fail on my previous Saab, a 1991 9000, but not until 120,000 miles.
Question #2: If I choose to buy a backup for safety's sake, is ONE spare enough or should I buy TWO? I don't recall reading any posts about whether the V6 DICs tend to fail separately or together? If the DIC for one bank of cylinders gets fried, can the other be far behind? As we know, no software upgrades are possible for 1999 9-5s, so there's no "bullet-proofing" these DICs. It's always going to be an issue on my '99, and I intend to keep this car for a long time. I'd like to be driving it when its a 15-year-old classic!
So, dear friends, what do you think? Safety backup or just wing it? One spare DIC or two?
