I'm taking a class on Automatic Transmission Design at work (GM Powertrain) and we had this day with a British chap with 30+ years experience in various car racing (engine building) and automotive chemical industry. He has worked for GM for the past few years in a group that develops ATF and other fluids.
Anyways, while talking about synthetic ATF and additives, we digressed into engines and the topic of oil changes came up. He basically said to follow your manual, NOT quick lube joints & dealers that suggest 3k intervals... "but its your money to waste however you bloddy feel." Then he talked about the synthetic motor oils, which he suggested IF you raced cars. Otherwise it was a waste of money.
The man was well versed and experienced. Just thought I'd share that. Oh, yeah... my '91 Civic will hit 300k in about 2 years. My interval is 7500 like the book says or later, when I'm lazy. I've used Mobil 1 in it once many years ago and have used dino stuff since... I guess if I drove a McLaren F1, I'd reconsider Mobil 1, but a Civic? Ehhhh?
