The boss has two slots cut into its sides. The drain-cock has a steel roll-pin piercing its sides which rides in the slots of the boss. This drain cock is difficult to open for right-handed people (I use a short pair of water pump pliers for added leverage) because of its location and angle. A quarter turn is all it takes, then the drain-cock pulls partially out of the boss so the coolant can drain out of the bottom.
