Does head bolt retorquing apply to V6?

My buddy called me yesterday to say his 2000 V6 blew a head gasket this week. Symptoms were "smoke" coming off engine due to coolant leak- couldn't find leaking hose- assumed it coming from head/block area. Took it to dealer who said it's head gasket, and he was quoted a several thousand dollar repair. I told him to hold off as I remember a note about the heads maybe just needing retorqued. My questions are: 1) Does this retorqing problem/fix apply to the V6? 2) Are there clear symptoms he can check himself to tell the difference between a blown gasket and a head needing torqued down? For myself, I'm wondering if this PM is something needed on my '99 V6 wagon. Thanks!
