check engine light & engine died

Sorry for this post without checking the collective wisdom on the board but I am a bit upset right now.
Weather here is overcast with drizzle. Stopped at a red light, check engine light came on and engine died. I restarted it but had to hold down the accelerator for the engine to keep running. Engine died twice more as I was trying to nurse it home.
Any ideas??
Hopefully this is NOT gonna be an expensive fix.
