They are 100% Saab (the 9-5 more-so than the 9-3 and 9000). We've gone back to the clam-shelled hood, and have the safety and performance thing pretty wrapped up as well.
The 9-5 is a world class car, and a fitting successor to the Saabs of yester-year. If you like your C900, you'll love the 9-5 (especially in a 5-spd).
The 9-5 is a much heavier car than the C900; it still comes standard with body panels that have the capabilities to attract a magnet. No composite or rubbermaid (Saturn) panels allowed. We still have longevity; just like your '88, a 9-5 will run as long as you'd like it to. The 4-cyl engine is basically the same motor that you have; the core has remained the same. The only things that have changed is the support systems. The car is stiffer, yet more comfortable, rattles less, and is far more advanced.
Jon, nothing has changed at Saab except for time. We've seen 13 years of technological advancments. The New Saab is not a different beast, just a better one.
Cheers,
Brian.
