Loud rattle driver side at idle Posted by vwsaab [Email] (#512) [Profile/Gallery] (more from vwsaab) on Wed, 17 May 2006 06:02:37 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Good morning folks,
Last night while my '99 9-5 4 cyl, 2.3L,(150K manual) was idling I heard a rather loud rattle sound coming from the driver side wheel area of the engine.
I had driven 235 miles yesterday and then parked the car, after allowing turbo to cool (no rattle). I then put in a new driver seat (about 1 hour work). After that I started the engine and the rattle started. It did not seem to increase when I slowly increased the rpms. All fluids are ok. No engine lights, oil, etc. The rattle sounds metallic - similar to timing chain but a lot louder.
This morning there was no such sound. It has always had regular maintenance when needed. Had dealer use coat hanger in pan/ pull valve cover, to check for sludge - no issue. Just had an oil change at dealer (2 days ago).
Is this just a weird happening or something major? The timing chain seems to have a faint rattle (pass side?). Engine/tranny seems to run great.
I am planning on performance upgrades (exhaust, ECU) but this has thrown me for a loop.
Thanks in advance,
Mike
