BMW and Mercedes both have an in-house chasis number to indicate generations. For example, the BMW 5 series have been E12 (70's-81), E28 (82-88), E34 (89-95), E39 (96-2002). AFAIK, SAAB never had a full chasis redeisgn with the classic 900's, then the whole line moved over to Opel chases. Perhaps it is time for GM to have a global platform naming mechanism; then again, does SAABUSA really want everyone to know that SAAB's and Saturns, and very soon Pontiacs all share the same chasis, like Epsilon 9-3, Epsilon Grand AM?
BTW, camry is a type of small crown, or royal/princely head-dress. So is corolla, corona, cressida, celsior (Lexus LS400/430 in Japan, marketted under Toyota brand). The top of the line Toyota sedan used to be the Toyota Crown.
