Put lower speed rated tires on your car at your own risk. Although your reasons are sound and I do agree that lower rated tire prices are more reasonable, it's probably not a good idea. For one, the higher rated tires have performance and handling characteristics that match the performance potential of your car. They are typically made of a stickier compound, which improves handling and shortens braking distances. Besides-you open yourself to possible liablity by putting speed rated tires not recommended by the manufacturer. Just don't try to sue SAAB if those tires let you down and spit your car into the weeds.
Why people decide to skimp on tires-which is the most important part of your car-is beyond me. Your tires are what keeps you on the road. A great car with sorry tires isn't worth squat. Great tires might provide that extra traction you need in that driving rainstorm. Or shorten that braking distance when the car in front of you slams their brakes. Think about it.
I've seen a couple of LS400s and the like with real cheap tires (with a T or S ratings, no less). We're talking about a 150mph, $50k car. Pathetic.
I'm all for saving money, but tires aren't the place to do it, IMHO.
