This option should still be available. For a short time this past April the locks on my '01 Aero Wagon were programmed to lock automatically upon car movement, but I couldn't stand it and had it reprogrammed.
You might want to double check and clarify which "automatic lock" sequence you were advised about - a) automatic lock on car movement or b) automatic lock x seconds after ignition key is removed and driver's door is opened then closed.
The alarm system does have an optional setting that arms the alarm after a programmable period of time elapses after the ignition key has been removed and then the driver's door is opened and then closed. This only arms the alarm system, however, and does not lock the doors. The fact that the doors don't lock in this scenario may be the "automatic lock" sequence you have heard is not present. I tried this setting on my '01 Aero, but found that I was frequently setting off the alarm when getting in the car because I had forgotten to lock it.
Setting up the car so that the doors are automatically locked when you exit the car may sound like a bad idea and an easy way to lock yourself out of your car, but I installed an aftermarket alarm in my '86 9kT that was programmed to automatically lock the doors 20 seconds after I pulled the ignition key then opened and closed the driver's door, and I loved it. I never once locked the keys in the car over a 6 year 130K mile period, and I ALWAYS knew the car was locked. I would go back to it in a minute if it were available on my '01 9-5.
